Hi, I nominate Uncorked in Calgary at http://communities.canada.com/calgaryherald/blogs/uncorked/default.aspx

It's a blog on a daily newspaper website in Calgary, Canada, and contains a general mix of interviews, news, reviews and more.
  • Michelle Rose
I would like to nominate http://ampelography.blogspot.com/ - the posts are extremely well written, and speak to the consumer as much as the wine "geeks." The posts range from interviews, understanding your consumer, pairings, with some seemingly unrelated current events. The overall tone is that of unpretentious ongoing education and exploration into the world of wine, with a dash of well placed humor.

  • I would like to nominate Palate Press, online wine magazine, at http://palatepress.com/ Through regular posts and top guests, this is an outlet for information and fun. I always look for fun!

I also think New York Cork Report deserves special recognition for excellent writing and focus on a particular region and industry.http://www.lenndevours.com/
  • Thank you David. That is very kind of you. For the judge's information, we have posted more than 450 stories since our launch in September.
  • www.winetonite.com by Ed Thralls. A great independent, non industry blog that continues to entertain and education me as a consumer.
  • Thanks Frank!
  • Nick A.
Another nomination for steveheimoff.com. A daily read for me. He rocks!

Finally- a wine blog from a knowledgeable person who has actually tasted the great wines of the world, studied and passed through certified wine courses, and is deeply involved in the wine business. Fun and informative- I vote for : http://mumulesvignes.com
  • philanderson
All of the criteria cited above can be found at http://winepeeps.com/. I have hope of my wine blog to be as organized and information driven as this one is.
  • Tyler Alford
  • sarahjanemcintosh
    Fearless and funny: winethropology.com
  • I nominate:
    http://www.vinography.com
the writing is witty, informed, and consumable.
Opinions are diverse, educated and more about wine character than just opinion.
I've been tasting with Alder before, albeit many years ago-way before vinography's birth. He really enjoys the adventure.

  • Perhaps Palate Press deserves consideration in the category. There are 5 "should"s listed in the criteria for nomination here, and I am sure Palate Press feels it meets each one.

As an magazine publishing what should be the best work from the world of wine bloggers, many see Palate Press as the wine blog of wine blogs.

I am nominating it here because someone nominated it in the Best New Wine Blog category, even though the first post on Palate Press is dated January 24, 2008, so on behalf of that passionate fan, I am preventing the effort from being a complete waste.

    Cheers,

    John
  • Wow, talk about damning by faint praise. John, if you don't feel Palate Press deserves your nomination here, don't make it. If somebody feels it should be nominated they will do so. That said, please note, as I said in the "New Wine" category, that Palate Press launched September 10, 2010, and the earlier dates were back-dated contributor bios, set earlier to avoid conflict with new stories (the dates are all now accurately reflected, now that they will not conflict and that it has become an issue).
  • I nominated you here because I didn't want to see any nomination effort wasted. I don't know of a magazine is a blog, but Palate Press is much more than a mere aggregator, relying on original material for content.

I can safely say that all content benefits from good editing, and the posts on Palate Press are better for the publishing process normally associated with a magazine.

If my praise felt faint, that is more owing to my desire to find a better category fit than anything to do with Palate Press itself.

I thought Best Industry might be a good fit, but it really wasn't.

In spite of your suggestion that Palate Press has yet to launch by setting that date in the future, you can't fool me and I suspect that you were trying to convey that Palate Press launched September 10, 2009. As such, it turns out that my effort to play the role of good Samaritan was unnecessary, and led only to make you think I don't love you.

I do, I do, I do love you truly Palate Press.

Seriously, I read Palate Press regularly, looking for many voices in one place.

I would have added you to my blogroll like I did all of the other Best New Wine ZBlog nominees, but you were already there.

    Cheers,

John "not likely to get a story approved by Palate Press" Cesano
  • Thank you John, for your kind words, and don't underestimate yourself. Send us a story some time. submissions@palatepress.com

I nominate http://thinkwinemarketing.wordpress.com/ written by John Corcoran for its overall knowledge of the wine market, for its excellent writing and for its oerall excellence.
  • Mary, thanks for the kind words & for the nomination..
    Cork
  • I would like to see this category broken into two parts.

--Under Best Blog by An Established Wine Writer, I would second the nominations for STEVE HEIMOFF, with all due respect to Eric Asimov and Tyler Coleman, whose work I also like very much. Heimoff has simply, for my taste, become the most readable, entertaining and enlightening blogger around.

--Under Best Blog by An Emerging Writer, I would cite both 1WINEDUDE and GOOD GRAPE, with the nod going to Dude because his range and confidence just ooze with "look at me, I am on my way".

  • Thanks, dad!
  • Debbie Nielsen
    I nominate the following blog:

I nominate steveheimoff.com because I trust him. He has a friendly, balanced voice and doesn't dwell in the negative. I feel like I'm on a friend's comfy sofa with a nice glass of wine when I read his blog.

Chalk up another mark for http://www.anotherwineblog.com.

They aren't afraid to go out on a limb, saw it off, and use the branch to poke at sacred cows. The writing is approachable, informative, and fun.

You can get wine information anywhere these days - but is the advice good? I feel I can trust the judgment of Joe and Amy.

  • brianoverstreet
We nominate Bruliam Wines – www.bruliamwines.com - for the Best Overall Wine Blog Award.

    Why?

    1. We are unabashedly nominating ourselves for this award and plan to use the identical list for at least one other award category nomination. That takes chutzpah.

    2. We have saved a ton of money over the past two years by quitting therapy and blogging about our nascent wine business instead.

    3. To our knowledge we’re the only wine producers who videoed ourselves barrel tasting our wine, declared we hated it, and then still posted the video.

    4. Our 6 year old son is named after a grape varietal, took his cork collection to kindergarten for sharing day, and was a grape farmer last Halloween. One of our four year old daughters can routinely identify pinot vs. zin vs. cab blindly. Her twin sister thinks we’re all crazy and would rather be chasing butterflies. We fully expect them to all hate us when they are teenagers.

    5. Our most popular post this year was titled Wine Blogging Is Dead. Go figure.

    6. We once ate a 1,500 calorie breakfast solely so we could write about it on the blog. The resulting gastrointestinal problems bring new meaning to the axiom that you must suffer for your art.

    7. Both of our mothers love all of our posts. They tell us so regularly.

    8. We managed to piss off an entire AVA before we even released a single bottle of wine.

    9. No joke - all of our profits go to charity. Since we are a start-up and have no profits, we have set aside a big portion of our marketing budget to make regular donations to charities chosen by members of our mailing list.

    10. All of our wine sales are direct-to-consumer via the web. The blog is our only marketing medium, and our business depends on the success of the content we produce. We have learned that blogging with your back to the wall makes one do some very strange things. Like make lists. And write obnoxiously long comments on other blogs.

In all seriousness, we have tremendous respect for the ridiculous amount of work that goes into crafting good wine and writing a good wine blog. We do not believe that we are the best in either realm, although we think we are decent enough at both. We appreciate the opportunity to be considered and, if nothing else, we invite you to check out what we’re doing over at www.bruliamwines.com.

We posted 120 times over the past year.

Wine Harlots! Funny, cheeky and for the educated wine drinker without being snobby.
  • I know the judges will narrow the nominees down to 5 finalists, and from those only 1 can win.

In the spirit of "it is an honor just to be nominated" here are seven wine bloggers who I read on a regular basis, and all are excellent, and each has a unique point of view:

    1 Wine Dude
    Another Wine Blog
    Bricks Of Wine
    Dirty South Wine
    Dr. Vino
    Fermentation
    Vinography

I nominate http://thinkwinemarketing.wordpress.com/ as the Best Overall Wine Blog.

This blog by John Corcoran is one of the best overall wine blogs available. Corcoran, with his extensive hands-on marketing experience in the wine industry, delivers an extremely well written, graphically beautiful, and educationally astute blog of interest not only to wine marketers, but to anyone in the general public with an affinity for good wines.
  • Mary, thank you for the kind words and for your support...

  • donclemens
I nominate "Good Grape: A Wine Manifesto" as my category winner. Jeff Lefevre is an astute thinker, creative writer, and is always making me think. It doesn't get any better.
  • Jinfash
I nominate http://saignee.wordpress.com because I personally believe it meets all of those criterias.
  • My vote: http://winechanneltv.tv "Wine Channel TV" - as Jessica Altieri says, "Wine is just a conversation waiting to happen".

Jess creates great video reviews, as well as conducting awesome interviews with winemakers, wine geeks, as well as celebrities who love wine. We're talking TOP celebrities and vino-connoisseurs!

She is currently running a video blogging segment on "Walmart wines" - which is really helping people (like me) on a budget who still want to experience GREAT wines. To top it off, she has challenged late night TV host David Letterman to a "wine taste off", featuring some of the jems she has discovered.
  • Brian

  • Joanne Johnson

    I love Another Wine Blog.

    http://www.anotherwineblog.com/

I've learned a lot from the blog. Not just on subjects like drinkability and price but also the use of wine in cooking. The writing is unpretentious and humorous. I nominate this blog.

  • Bjorn, you are obviously a gentleman with very refined tastes!

Thanks, that was a very nice way to be nominated.

I am writing to nominate JohnOnWine.com for a Wine Blog Award in the Best New Wine Blog category.

John's blog is well read and highly ranked. His posts aren't puff pieces, but often run t thousands of words; he writes with passion and it is felt in each article he writes.

John started in April 2009, and has 66 posts, his writing has gotten better, richer, more full month by month, post by post.

Consider his event recaps, they are the most complete often surpassing the descriptions of wine writers who have been around the scene many more years:

    Celebrating V. Sattui Winery’s 125th Anniversary

    19TH Annual Zinfandel Festival

The Biggest Petite Event of them all – Dark & Delicious

Passion for Pinot Noir, a recap of the Pinot Noir Summit

John's interview with Ravenswood's Joel Peterson and Bedrock Wine Company's Morgan Twain-Peterson was a must read:

A conversation with Ravenswood’s Joel Peterson and Bedrock Wine Company’s Morgan Twain-Peterson

I look forward to each winery review John writes, it is almost like being there:

    Feature Spotlight: Toad Hollow Vineyards

    Featured spotlight winery: Keller Estates

Mendocino Wine Company: Parducci and Paul Dolan Vineyards

I tried to taste Fetzer’s, but tasted Topel Winery’s wines instead.

    John provides wine reviews:

Nine Fine Wines reviewed, with my food pairings. All socially conscious.

2005 Toad Hollow Merlot Reserve, Richard McDowell Vineyard, Russian River Valley

As well as wine book and accessory reviews:

Getting Doon with Been Doon So Long

    Age Gets Better With Wine

    Friends don’t let friends Vacu-Vin

Finally, John handles tougher more controversial aspects of wine, wine and health, wine blogger ethics, proposed wine excise tax increases, and entertains while he educates his readers:

Wine and pregnancy, a healthy mix.

So, you don’t get wine writers or the wine industry? I know why.

Will Trader Joe’s be forced to sell Seven Buck Chuck?

Who is behind the “Alcohol-Related Harm and Damage Services Act of 2010″ Initiative?

With respect to all of the talented first year wine bloggers nominated, I think John Cesano has to be given serious consideration for this award. John's work is not just well read, it is referenced, tweeted, retreated, linked, and commented on with great regularity.
