The Best Writing On a Wine Blog should go to:

    www.tomswineblog.blogspot.com
  • Libby Becker
i was so lucky to find this blog and have shared it with everyone that i could think of that enjoys wine....which is everyone that i know. it is http:thinkwinemarketing.com and the man behind the creativity is John Corcoran. hands down the most interesting wine industry blog that i have found.
  • eric
    Hardy Wallace, that's who!
  • Anonymous
I may be too late but it's only 11 p.m. on April 7 here in Calgary, Canada. I'd like to nominate Uncorked in Calgary -- written by a professional journalist with a master's degree in journalism as well as her intermediate WSET certificate. It's an unpretentious, useful and entertaining mix of interviews, reviews, news. The blog is on the Calgary Herald website, at http://communities.canada.com/calgaryherald/blogs/uncorked/default.aspx
  • Ed Freeman
Some of the best wine writing has to be at Burke Morton's www.winethink.net which is full of posts that are great fun to read. He also uses some wicked humor, and presents interesting perspectives. He often embeds secondary meanings in his writing, so I sometimes go back to reread some of his posts just to get a little more out of them.
  • i am relatively new to this whole wine thing, but(!), happily(!!) rob from corks+caftans makes wine accessible, and, well, awesome. he's both sweet and hilarious...and about wine! who knew?! he makes me want the wine he reviews...like, the run-out-and-buy it kind of want...and, it does not help that his wife makes me want all her clothes (yeah, the run-to-the-internet-and click it kind of want). my favorite blog right now. hands down.
  • Caroline
Rob from Corks + Caftans has a brilliant voice and consistently rates wines within my price range, which makes it helpful. His suggested pairings are also usually great. I enjoy everything about the blog, not just the wine reviews.
  • cc
Rob from Corks & Caftans makes me want to drink wine.
  • oliveshoot
Rob at Corks n Caftans (http://corksandcaftans.wordpress.com) has a fabulously witty and indulgent way of sharing his knowledge of wines. Not only does he provide a wealth of knowledge into the vino culture, he also shares personal, witty, and offbeat stories that make this blog worth coming back to. http://corksandcaftans.wordpress.com- best writing on a wine blog you'll find anywhere!
  • cjow
Writing that keeps me coming back for more! Rob knows his stuff when it comes to wine, but the stories about finding a special bottle by accident, chasing down a little known wine, and photos of the dinners he and his wife Carey whip up give it the personal touch.
    http://www.corksandcaftans.wordpress.com
  • Cami
If you are not following Rob from Corks and Caftans, you are truly missing something special. The writing makes you want to rush out and buy every bottle that gets his seal of approval and the photos are gorgeous. Plus, you're guaranteed many laughs. Always looking forward to the next post! http://www.corksandcaftans.wordpress.com
  • titomcgovern
    Rob from Corks and Caftans!
    http://www.corksandcaftans.wordpress.com
  • Taylor
Rob from Corks and Caftans, http://www.corksandcaftans.wordpress.com

Wonderfully written reviews and great photography.
  • I love Rob's blog at Corks and Caftans!
    http://corksandcaftans.wordpress.com/
Great photos, great knowledgeable writing and very personable.
  • Neil
Best Writing on a Wine Blog award should go to Rob and Corks + Caftans (http://corksandcaftans.wordpress.com)

It's mindblowingly descriptive, funny, anecdotal, and on the mark. Wonderfully written and edited. [The photography is also out of this world.] He writes it as part of a husband and wife team (she writes about fashion) and they are really taking off with local and national press. But his descriptions of the wines he drinks wear the crown; it's quite an addictive little blog.

    http://corksandcaftans.wordpress.com
  • Huge fan of Frank Morgan's Drink What You Like.
It's fun, funny, occasionally snarky, while at the same time you get solid wine criticism that’s approachable and entertaining.

    http://drinkwhatyoulike.wordpress.com/
  • peaches
Fermentation by Tom Wark is the best by far.
  • I'm admittedly not a wine aficionado.I've got very basic likes, & not particularly exciting ones..This doesn't stop me from enjoying what I think is the best wine blog I've come across..Joe & Amy Power write with such an easy style.I can imagine being there, & it's how they talk. They're interesting, funny, down to earth, & extremely knowledgeable.. I've actually begun to try wines that before I wouldn't even have. I have gone by & scoped out other wine bloggers..While they're good, my favorite, hands down are Joe & Amy~
    http://www.anotherwineblog.com/
  • Thanks, Deb! :)
  • tom hyland
I nominate Tom Maresca for his blog:

Tom's wine line, which can be found here:

    http://ubriaco.wordpress.com/

Tom has been a wine writer for several decades and has recently begun this blog. His writing is far more intricate than most blogs out there.
  • douglassexton
Winethropoogy (AKA Vin o'clock) pops my cork every time. Here is where to find a happy minimum of oenospeak, large dollops of down-to-earth wine knowledge, all nicely seasoned with consistently reliable buying recommendations. Steve demystifies wines for me and points me at some truly fine gargles. His sense of humor is rare and a delight to experience. Good on ye' Steve!
  • philanderson
Although sporadic, the blog generalwinethoughts.com is usually witty and entertaining. I am usually happy after I've read each of their posts.
  • Guest
  • sarahjanemcintosh
Awesome - and hilarious - writing on winethropology.com
  • I nominate Clive of The Oregon WIne Blog because he's good with the writing but also dangerously handsome.

    -Clive
  • Stacey Fujimura
I doublely nominate Clive Pursehouse as the "best wine blog writer" due to his ability to drink lots of wine and clearly write about it. As a matter of fact, Clive is so good at what he does, everyone else should just bow out. Cheers to Clive and The Oregon Wine Blog!
  • wineblog
Wine author Andrew Smith has just started a blog on the historical and cultural aspects of wine, and its wonderfully well written!
    www.corkandfoil.co.uk/blog it gets my nomination!
  • I nominate My Wine Education http://www.wine-girl.net for this category.
  • Cynthia
http://www.winethink.net is one of the most insightful and original voices I've read on wine. The thoughtful posts are clever and witty, and use English in many ways beyond the broad vocabulary on display. Wordplay is common, sometimes in very subtle ways, and it's not limited to the more thought provoking posts. The tone of posts ranges from informal to academic, but they are always engaging.
  • Martropolis
I know a lot of you haven't read his stuff, but John Davis (founder of Wine Insiders, and Geja's Rest. in Chicago) has some really original, insightful, and downright funny stories over at http://johnsstories.com.

Check him out if you haven't had the chance yet. You might find a new favorite blog.
  • The only wine blog that I RSS is 1winedude. His posts are witty, entertaining, thought provoking & the right length--meaning he uses enough words to convey his point. He comes across as his own man, intuitively knowing that what makes a good post and what doesn't.
  • Wow - thanks!
  • carlagesellstreeter
I nominate My Wine Education (http://www.wine-girl.net) for the Best Writing On a Wine Blog category.
  • I nominate My Wine Education http://www.wine-girl.net for this category.
  • Trek
For best writing, has to be 750 mL. http://750mL.blogspot.com/
  • Cheezqueen
    http://www.wine-girl.net
For obvious reasons, read the blog and you'll get it.
Definitely posts more than once a week and the writing from Gabriella Opaz and Ryan Opaz plus their guests gets better and better.
  • Tobias
If Jon Bonné is missing a nomination, please include The Cellarist, http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/wine/index
  • hardywallace
For sure- Jon's writing is amazing
  • TI
  • ronwasham
    Joe,

Well, thank you very much. I can't believe Alder didn't nominate me. But, once again, you've beat him to the punch. A sincere thank you.
  • Finally - I am original!!! :-)
  • Mark
Best writing by far is winefornormalpeople.blogspot.com
  • alecwhite
    Hosemaster
  • Samantha Dugan
Okay now I can stop holding my breath...thank you!
Here's the link to HoseMaster of Wine
    http://hosemasterofwine.blogspot.com/
  • Wine writing greatness can be found at www.anotherwineblog.
  • Thanks! :)
  • Nancy Deprez
I third the nomination for Samantha Sans Dosage. It is great writing and puts the romance and story-telling back in wine.
  • There is a lot of great wine writing in blogs, but, for me, the best writing overall goes to SAMANTHA SANS DOSAGE. This is writing that transcends its focus on wine and becomes moving, personal, inspiring.
  • Samantha Dugan
    Sir Charles you humble me....again.
  • Jeff Lefevere's Good Grape: A Wine Manifesto.

    and

Meg Houston Maker, at Palate Press: The online wine magazine.
  • Steve
  • Rebecca Terner
I nominate Steve Heimoff for best writing. He is a master with a unique voice and his passion for his subject is simply addictive. He has opened this somewhat dull area to an entirely new audience with his funny, poignant and insightful blog. Steve Heimoff at steveheimoff.com is simply the best wine blog out there.
  • S Greene
I'd like to nominate William Allen of SimpleHedonisms.com in Northern CA.
  • mikekohne
I vote for Mr. Heimoff's blog... steveheimoff.com. Steve has great access to the industry and takes a journalistic approach to the subject matter in his posts. At the same time, he lends his voice and perspective to each topic in an fashion that appeals to industry people as well as general consumers (not an easy thing to do)...
  • ronwasham
As an aside, is this category for Best Self-Promotion on a Wine Blog, or Best Writing on a Wine Blog?

I nominate Alfonso Cevola for "On the Wine Trail in Italy," www.acevola.blogspot.com.
  • Samantha Dugan
I second the nomination for On the Wine Trail in Italy, beautifully written posts.
  • brianoverstreet
We nominate Bruliam Wines – www.bruliamwines.com - for the Best Writing On a Wine Blog Award.

    Why?

    1. We are unabashedly nominating ourselves for this award and plan to use the identical list for at least one other award category nomination. That takes chutzpah.

    2. We have saved a ton of money over the past two years by quitting therapy and blogging about our nascent wine business instead.

    3. To our knowledge we’re the only wine producers who videoed ourselves barrel tasting our wine, declared we hated it, and then still posted the video.

    4. Our 6 year old son is named after a grape varietal, took his cork collection to kindergarten for sharing day, and was a grape farmer last Halloween. One of our four year old daughters can routinely identify pinot vs. zin vs. cab blindly. Her twin sister thinks we’re all crazy and would rather be chasing butterflies. We fully expect them to all hate us when they are teenagers.

    5. Our most popular post this year was titled Wine Blogging Is Dead. Go figure.

    6. We once ate a 1,500 calorie breakfast solely so we could write about it on the blog. The resulting gastrointestinal problems bring new meaning to the axiom that you must suffer for your art.

    7. Both of our mothers love all of our posts. They tell us so regularly.

    8. We managed to piss off an entire AVA before we even released a single bottle of wine.

    9. No joke - all of our profits go to charity. Since we are a start-up and have no profits, we have set aside a big portion of our marketing budget to make regular donations to charities chosen by members of our mailing list.

    10. All of our wine sales are direct-to-consumer via the web. The blog is our only marketing medium, and our business depends on the success of the content we produce. We have learned that blogging with your back to the wall makes one do some very strange things. Like make lists. And write obnoxiously long comments on other blogs.

In all seriousness, we have tremendous respect for the ridiculous amount of work that goes into crafting good wine and writing a good wine blog. We do not believe that we are the best in either realm, although we think we are decent enough at both. We appreciate the opportunity to be considered and, if nothing else, we invite you to check out what we’re doing over at www.bruliamwines.com.

We posted 120 times over the past year.
  • Fans of seven great wine blogs nominated their favorite writers in the New Wine Blog Award category, and while the blog may be new to the nominating reader, they have been posting since before April 1, 2009.

Dirty South Winem first post November 11, 2007

I nominate http://thinkwinemarketing.wordpress.com/ for the Best Writing on a Wine Blog.

This blog's author, John Corcoran, is not only an well known expert in the California wine market, but he is also a well informed, often witty, and well phrased author. His posts are often interlaced with interesting bit sof his family history that entertain as well as inform.
  • Mary, thanks for the support and the nomination ....
    Cheers,
    Cork

    Mike's Log, Not A Blog (http://mikeslognoblog.blogspot.com/)
  • Polarpeeps
gregory dal piaz on http://www.snooth.com/articles/ He really capture the spirits of his subject and can present confusing topics in easy to understand language.
  • Much appreciate this Ryan, but the blog is not eligible - I do not post minimum once a week, which is the criteria (or rather 52 posts per year).
  • Chris
  • Thanks, Chris!
  • SEAN SULLIVAN @WaWineReports http://www.wawinereport.com/ The man rules.
  • Thanks SWG!
  • Weston3220

  • Charley7
My vote is for the Wine Peeps...... Wonderful coverage wines, wineries and women in the industry!
  • Chris
  • ronwasham
The most interesting writer of all is Samantha Dugan of Samantha Sans Dosage (www.sansdosage.blogspot.com). The most interesting, and the most talented.
  • I second the nom , although these kind of things are usually pop contests. Sorry Samantha, I am sure you neither care for nor desire this kind of attention. In any case, it will not bring The Hosemaster back.
  • Samantha Dugan
You two are too kind, oh and I put both of your checks in the mail this morning.
  • donclemens
Hoping not to duplicate an earlier post, I want to nominate Jeff Lefevere's "Good Grape: A Wine Manifesto" for his consistent excellence. Thought-provoking, insightful, and frequently wickedly skewering some of the excesses of marketing driven prose, I often find myself laughing out loud at his blogs. (jlefevere@gmail.com is the e-mail contact.)
  • Lar
Hi, I'd like to nominate Steve Heimoff (http://www.steveheimoff.com)
  • I'm gonna be a homer: winetonite.com, atlantawineguy.com
  • Thanks, you homer.
  • Ray
  • Pam
I'd like to nominate 'The Naked Vine' by Mike Rosenberg. There were 60 enlightening and entertaining posts over the past year.

  • Lizzy15
    1Wine Dude, I like it!
  • Thanks!!
  • stella
I nominate Christopher Watkins' writing at 4488: A Ridge Blog
    http://blog.ridgewine.com/
"original, insightful, entertaining" --hell, yeah, absolutely! His writing is quirky, humanistic, language-engaged...and very intelligent.
  • winebratsf
    GoodGrape!
  • GJ
I'd like to nominate the Oregon Wine Blog (http://www.theoregonwineblog.com/) - they've got a great writing style and definitely an original voice.
  • sally marden
    Drinkster by Philip White.

You won't find better writing anywhere, least of all on a wine blog.

    http://drinkster.blogspot.com/
  • goodgrape
    The Pour by Eric Asimov

    http://thepour.blogs.nytimes.com/
  • doucheweasel
Asimov's blog has been folded under a different feature. With that, his blogroll has disappeared.

A blogroll and the reciprocal exchange of links is an intrinsic part of a blog. Now, it's just an online food and drink section and NOT a blog.

I don't think The Pour should be eligible - no matter the author or quality of writing.
  • ChrisinSunnyside
  • WineBeerWA
    Agreed!
  • laurenbullock
There is noone more creative in his writing than 'the Pour Fool' on the Seattle PI website.
  • winenegress
Well, I figure I have to do this or no one else will:

    http://chronicnegress.net.

At least a hundred people like my writing so I guess that's something.
  • Corey Liebig
    I nominate Winesooth.com
  • Julia Herres
  • Kathryn
    I'd like to nominate www.theoregonwineblog.com. 109 posts since April 1, 2009.
  • bensimons
  • Thanks - very kind of you!
    141 posts from November 2009 - March 2010
  • bensimons
Thank you very much. Honored to be nominated in this category.
  • And one more:

    reignofterroir.com
  • Very sweet of you, Joe.
  • lisamattson
I agree with Joe on Steve's writing. But I also nominated Steve for best industry blog. I expect him to get nods in both.
  • Steve Heimoff
    Thank you Dude.
  • Okay, now I know this is a farce. Great April Fool's joke nominating Steve Heimoff, Joe!
